In Sanskrit, Abhishekam means “cleansing” or “purifying”. It is a Hindu religious rite or way of praying wherein a devotee pours a liquid offering on an image or murti of the deity. Amidst the soulful chanting of mantras, the deity is bathed by the priests. The deities are offered, among other things, honey, ghee, milk, yoghurt, rosewater, panchamrita, and sesame oil. Panchamrita refers to milk, honey, ghee, sugar, and yoghurt and is symbolic of the five elements and senses: vision (water), taste (earth), hearing (fire), touch (air), and smell (ether). The philosophy behind Abhishekam is that of total devotion and surrender to the supreme deity.
The cleansing of the murti is a cleansing of one’s mind. Abhishekam requires knowledge, guidance, and understanding. We welcome you to Shri Gauri Shankar Mandir where our learned pandits can help you experience the spiritual cleansing of the mind and body. And also in a peaceful environment.
Significance of Abhishekam
Abhishekam is not done only for our Gods; it is also done for ourselves. Just like the water flows over the murti, knowledge flows into our minds. And helps us prepare to connect with our inner soul, the divinity which is in all of us but we fail to realize that. It purifies our minds and souls and helps us meditate. In a way, Abhishekam helps us connect with our roots and who we are.
