Mundan Pooja is an important part of Hindu culture. Accordingly, it is done between 7 days to 3 months after a child’s birth. Also, the hair of the child is completely shaven as part of Vedic rituals. It is also known as the Chaula Pooja or the Choodakarana Pooja. Tribute is offered to Lord Ganesh, Maa Lakshmi, and the Navagrahas.
During the Pooja, Homam is performed, after which the priest cuts off a part of the baby’s hair. Following this, a barber shaves off the hair completely, leaving only a tuft of hair at the back of the head. Also after shaving, Gangajal is poured on the bald head and a mixture of sandalwood and turmeric paste is applied.
Significance:
According to Sanatana Dharma, a soul gets human birth after birth through 84 lakh yonis. The shaving of the head represents freedom from the sins and deeds of previous births. Also, it signifies moving on from the past life into the present. Therefore, the Mundan Puja relieves the individual of:
- His or her sins from a previous birth
- Negative influences of the evil eye
It helps in:
- Cleansing the soul
- Promotes good health and dispels diseases
- Bestows a long and fruitful life
Scientific benefits:
Scientifically, a Mundan ceremony offers the following benefits:
- It is scientifically proven that shaving the head stimulates the nerves and the brain, thereby, strengthening mental power
- The shaven head improves sunlight absorption for Vitamin D synthesis in the body
- Boosts hair growth
- Improves hair quality
- Cools the baby’s head in the hot summer months
- Relieves the distresses of teething
The tuft of hair that is kept is also known as the body, choti, or Shikha and also acts as a shield for protecting the brain. The sandalwood and turmeric paste acts as an antiseptic and quickens healing.
